From Blueprints to Big Builds at Tosyalı-SULB

Work is continuing at different parts of the site of the Tosyali-SULB steel project in Benghazi. Construction teams are working on the foundations of the plant’s future operations, main structures and facilities. Much of the recent effort has been spent on completing the foundations, where piling is nearly complete, while other teams continue work preparing the areas where equipment and supporting buildings will be installed.

The remaining piling work behind the Cooling Tower is in progress and the foundation bases for the CDRI Warehouse have been completed. These are important elements of the project, since they support the extensive infrastructure and equipment that will be put in place as the project unfolds.

Work is also progressing on the main Shaft Furnace which will be used for the production of Direct Reduced Iron. Crews around the furnace have been installing steel supports, lifting upper sections into place and securing structures in the Top Feeding Main Structure area. As more of these sections are added, the main production area is beginning to take shape, giving a better idea of what the finished plant will look like.

Elsewhere on site, construction has been progressing around the Pipe Rack area, with foundations and connecting beams complete. Workers have also completed the concrete work for the columns, beams and roof slabs of the Main Control Building and the first concrete layer for the Cooling Gas Spray Preventer. Meanwhile, work is underway on substations, maintenance buildings and other control buildings that will be needed to support the plant's day-to-day operations.

In parallel with the construction of the Air Separation Unit, new equipment has also been arriving in Benghazi, such as transformers for the electrical substation and tanks for storing oxygen and liquid nitrogen. The plant will need more than its main production equipment to operate.

This equipment being on site also allows teams to start preparing for the next phases of installation and testing as the surrounding structures are completed. Engineers are monitoring progress along the way to ensure installations meet the project’s technical and safety requirements, so each area is properly staged before work moves forward.

Behind all this progress are the engineers, technicians and construction workers who are working in different parts of the project every day. Some are working on foundations, others are installing steel structures and some are preparing buildings. Together, their work is helping get the various areas of the plant closer to completion.

Still a lot of work to be done, but with foundations almost finished, main structures taking shape and new equipment arriving on site, the project is steadily progressing. As construction progresses more of the various pieces are falling into place, bringing the Benghazi steel complex closer to a functioning production facility.
